Spring Lake Memorial Missionary Baptist Church

Historical Setting

The idea for Spring Lake Memorial Baptist Church began on December 6, 1973, when Mr. William McLean, Sr. and Mr. Joseph McMillian met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John and Inez McKoy, Jr. They gathered to discuss the possibility of establishing a new church in the community.  Later that month, on December 22, a group of Christian friends assembled during a Christmas program, guided by Dr. David Bell of Durham, NC. They explored the spiritual needs and practical steps involved in organizing a church.

Dr. Bell expressed his willingness to lead and organize this congregation and announced that a formal meeting would take place on December 28, 1973. At that gathering, Rev. Bell explained the foundational principles for establishing a church, officers were elected, and the name Spring Lake Memorial Baptist Church was adopted. Recognizing the need for additional leadership, they invited Rev. Tew to serve as assistant pastor. The first official church service was held on January 6, 1974, at K’s Nursery & Kindergarten Auditorium. The group also planned fundraisers such as the Twenty-Friends Rally, a 60-day member donation drive, and musical events to support the church’s development.

Church members evaluated several potential sites for their building and, following a recommendation by William E. McLean, selected the current design. Ultimately, land was secured on Chapel Hill Road, and planning for the new church facility commenced.

A milestone occurred on May 25, 1974, with the church’s groundbreaking ceremony, a day marked by both excitement and sorrow, as it was also the day beloved member Mrs. Lottie Johnson passed away.  Brigadier General James B. Vaught delivered an inspiring message at the ceremony, encouraging members with the words: “When the going gets tough, get tough with the going.”

The church’s organization continued with the appointment of Deacon John McKoy, Jr. as Business Manager. Under his leadership, construction progressed steadily. That same year, Deacon McKoy answered the call to ministry and was ordained as a minister of the gospel.

In August 1974, two Magnolia trees were planted with dedication plaques honoring Mrs. Lottie Johnson and Sgt. Gussie Wilson, a respected friend and generous supporter.

Among the devoted members who shaped the church’s early years was Brother Jessie Parker. He worked closely with the founders, always eager to help and dedicated himself to the church’s growth. As a trustee and tireless worker, his efforts touched every part of the church. His commitment was evident in his daily walks to the church, reflecting his deep love for the congregation.

As Spring Lake Memorial Baptist Church grew, several key individuals became the first to serve in important roles within the congregation:

First Pastor: Dr. David Bell

            First Usher: Sister Flora Edwards

First Musician:  Brother William E. McLean

First Choir:  The Gospel Bells, named for Dr David Bell
